IELTS Academic Writing Task 1: Sample Answers

Flowchart

Flowcharts show a step-by-step procedure on how to do something. They usually have a large number of steps and can go in several possible directions according to the information in the chart.

Static Information

Static information diagrams show data in several categories from a fixed point in time. The information can be shown in a bar chart. a table or a pie chart.

Multiple Diagrams

Multiple diagrams are 2 (or more) types of diagrams showing information related to the topic. The diagrams can be a combination of  the main diagram types - pie chart, table, line graph and bar chart and their functions can be a combination of describing trends and static information.

Machines & Devices

These are diagrams that show how a machine or device works and/or the procedure of how to operate it. 

Dynamic Charts (Past)

Diagrams with trends show information over a period of time that can be in the past, from past to present or past to future. The information typically includes the increases and decreases in several categories. The diagram types can be line graphs, pie charts, bar charts or tables.

Industrial (Manufacturing) Process 

Diagrams showing a process are usually industrial or commercial and depict how something is produced, step-by-step. The diagram will include arrows to show you how the process progresses.

Recycle Procedure

Recycling diagrams show the step-by-step procedure of how products are reused. The diagram is divided into stages with arrows usually included to show you how the procedure progresses. 

Natural Cycle

Natural cycles show a process or procedure from the world of nature. The major difference between natural cycles and process/procedures is that it is an ongoing or continuous process that constantly repeats. 

Maps

Maps come in many forms. They can show the development of a location from the past to the present, in the past, proposed changes in the future and single maps show proposals for the development of facilities in the future. This page covers all types of maps with sample answers for each one.
