The Importance of Linking Words and Phrases in IELTS Writing and Speaking

In IELTS Writing, they're known as "cohesive devices," and in Speaking, they're called "discourse markers," but we usually just call them linking words. These words and phrases connect your ideas, and using them right can boost your scores for coherence and cohesion.


First, get a grip on what these linking words do—in other words, know why you're using them. In your writing and speaking, use a variety of these linking words and phrases.
